History of Carthage Real Estate

Activities in Carthage have revolved around the courthouse through the years, and still do today. By dividing Cumberland County, Moore County was created and on July 4 1784, the North Carolina legislature officially recognized Moore County. Because there were no incorporated towns in the new county there wasn't a county seat and no spot to hold court. The legislature appointed a committee to come up with a site for a new county seat.

The site was in the center of the new county, and the name Carthage was chosen. The town itself was not laid out until 1803. Carthage did not officially become the county seat until 1804.

In 1814, the courthouse was moved to the location of the historic courthouse. This location is at the intersection of the main avenues of Carthage. The courthouse sits at the highest elevation of the county, an altitude of almost 900 feet. The 1814 courthouse has been replaced six times, due to a floor collapse and several fires. The historic fifth courthouse and government building was erected across the street. Today both the fifth and sixth courthouse are used as government offices and court facilities.

From the 1850's to the 1920's, Carthage's growth was due to its successful buggy industry. This major industry remained the largest factory in Moore County into the 20th century. The factory's peak was in 1890 turning out approximately 3000 vehicles a year. The horse drawn buggy brought prosperity to Carthage, but the automobile spelled doom for the buggy company. The Buggy Festival of Carthage is an annual event honoring the town's heritage of carriage makers.  Carthage is very proud that it has over 50 building and residences of historic significance, within the National Historic District.

With a population of about 14,600, Carthage is seen as one of the faster growing towns in the county. Carthage has a long and rich heritage in the history of Moore County since the colonial days. It is an ideal community in which to consider real estate.
